Native to northeastern Asia, this maple species offers year-round interest with its greenish-white bark marked by dark vertical fissures, creating a snakeskin-like pattern that stands out in any landscape. The tree produces lush green leaves that turn attractive shades of yellow in autumn, adding seasonal color to gardens and wooded areas.

Manchurian Maple is an excellent choice for specimen planting, woodland gardens, or as a unique focal point in a mixed border. Its moderate growth habit and tolerance of partial shade make it adaptable to various garden settings. The striped bark is especially eye-catching in winter when the tree is bare, providing visual interest during the dormant season.

Plant Features

Distinctive striped bark with greenish-white and dark fissures

Fresh green foliage that transitions to yellow in fall

Moderate growth rate and rounded canopy

Excellent winter interest from patterned bark

Adaptable to partial shade and woodland conditions

Growing Information

Botanical Name: Acer tegmentosum

Plant Type: Deciduous ornamental tree

Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade

Soil: Moist, well-drained soil; tolerates a range of soil types

Water Requirements: Moderate; keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged

Growth Habit: Upright, rounded canopy

USDA Hardiness Zones: 4-8

Mature Height: 20-30 feet

Spacing: 15-20 feet apart for specimen planting

Planting & Care

To grow Manchurian Maple from seed, cold stratification is recommended to improve germination. Mix seeds with moist peat or sand and refrigerate for 60-90 days before sowing. Sow seeds in a well-draining seed-starting mix, barely covering them with soil. Keep the medium consistently moist and maintain a temperature around 65-70°F (18-21°C). Germination can be slow and uneven, so patience is required.

Once seedlings have developed several true leaves, transplant them into individual pots and grow them on in a sheltered location. Gradually acclimate young trees to outdoor conditions before planting in their permanent position. Choose a site with well-drained soil and adequate moisture. Water regularly during the first few years to help establish a deep root system. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch away from the trunk.

What's Included

10 Acer tegmentosum seeds (Manchurian Maple).

https://blakesflora.com/products/10-acer-tegmentosum-seeds-manchurian-maple-striped-bark-ornamental-tree
