Unlike the more common Eastern Redbud, this species is notable for its larger leaves and more vigorous growth habit, making it a striking specimen tree for gardens and landscapes. The tree offers multi-season interest: vibrant pink flowers in spring, followed by large, heart-shaped leaves that turn yellow in fall.

Giant Redbud is an excellent choice for a focal point in the garden, a small shade tree, or as part of a mixed border. Its relatively compact size for a tree makes it suitable for residential landscapes, and the early blooms provide a valuable nectar source for pollinators.

Plant Features

Rare ornamental deciduous tree with large, heart-shaped leaves

Abundant pink blossoms in spring before leaf emergence

Attractive yellow fall foliage

Vigorous growth habit, reaching up to 30 feet tall

Attracts pollinators and provides multi-season interest

Growing Information

Botanical Name: Cercis gigantea

Plant Type: Deciduous tree

Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade

Soil: Well-drained, moist soil

Water Requirements: Moderate; water regularly during establishment

Growth Habit: Upright, spreading canopy

USDA Hardiness Zones: 5-9

Bloom Season: Spring

Mature Height: 20-30 feet

Spacing: 20-30 feet apart

Planting & Care

To grow Giant Redbud from seed, scarify the seeds by nicking the seed coat or soaking in hot water for 24 hours to improve germination. Sow seeds in a well-draining seed-starting mix, barely covering them with soil. Keep the medium consistently moist but not waterlogged, and maintain a temperature around 70-75°F (21-24°C). Germination can be slow and uneven, taking several weeks to a few months. Once seedlings have developed several true leaves, transplant them into individual pots and grow them on in a sheltered location until they are large enough to plant outdoors.

When planting in the landscape, choose a site with well-drained soil and adequate sunlight. Water regularly during the first few years to help establish a deep root system. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch away from the trunk. Prune only as needed to remove dead or crossing branches, preferably in late winter or early spring.

What's Included

10 Cercis gigantea seeds (Giant Redbud Tree).

https://blakesflora.com/products/10-giant-redbud-tree-seeds-cercis-gigantea-rare-ornamental-pink-blossoms
