The delicate, pale lilac to mauve blossoms open in the late afternoon and release a captivating scent that can perfume an entire garden or patio. This night-blooming habit makes it a favorite for moon gardens, evening entertaining areas, and near windows or walkways where the fragrance can be enjoyed after sunset.

Plants grow upright and branch freely, reaching about 12 to 18 inches tall. The flowers are attractive to pollinators and make lovely, fragrant cut flowers. Evening Scented Stock is easy to grow from seed and works well in borders, containers, and cottage-style plantings. Its unassuming daytime appearance hides a remarkable evening performance that gardeners look forward to each season.

Plant Features

Intensely fragrant flowers that release their scent primarily in the evening and at night

Delicate pale lilac to mauve blooms on upright, branching plants

Attracts pollinators and makes a fragrant cut flower

Ideal for moon gardens, patios, and evening outdoor living areas

Easy to grow annual from seed

Growing Information

Botanical Name: Matthiola longipetala

Plant Type: Annual

Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade

Soil: Well-drained soil

Water Requirements: Moderate; keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged

Growth Habit: Upright, branching

Bloom Season: Late spring to summer

Mature Height: Approximately 12–18 inches

Spacing: 9–12 inches apart

Planting & Care

Sow Evening Scented Stock seeds directly outdoors in spring after the danger of frost has passed, or start indoors 4–6 weeks before the last frost for earlier blooms. Lightly press seeds into the soil surface; do not cover deeply, as light aids germination. Keep the soil consistently moist until seedlings emerge. Once seedlings are established, thin them to the recommended spacing to encourage healthy growth and good air circulation.

Water regularly during dry spells, but avoid overhead watering in the evening to help prevent disease. Deadhead spent flowers to prolong the bloom period. Evening Scented Stock performs best in cooler weather and may decline in the heat of midsummer; successive sowings can extend the season. Enjoy the fragrant evening display from summer into early fall.

What's Included

100 Evening Scented Stock seeds (Matthiola longipetala).

https://blakesflora.com/products/100-evening-scented-stock-seeds-matthiola-longipetala-fragrant-night-blooming-flower
