Blooming in late spring into early summer, it brings a soft, naturalized look to borders, meadow plantings, and wildflower areas, and its abundant blooms create a lovely, old-fashioned display across the season.
Often used in informal garden beds, pollinator-friendly plantings, and cut flower arrangements, Dame's Rocket is a biennial or short-lived perennial that typically forms a rosette of foliage the first year and sends up flowering stems the following season. It self-sows readily in suitable conditions, returning year after year, and pairs nicely with other tall cottage garden plants. Allow spent flowers to mature if you wish for it to naturalize.
Species: Hesperis matronalis
Type: Biennial or short-lived perennial
Plant_Habit: Upright, branching
Sun: Full sun to partial shade
Soil: Average, well-drained
Zones: 3 to 9
Germination: 14 to 28 days at 65 to 70F
Sowing: Surface sow, lightly press into soil; light aids germination
Spacing: 12 to 18 inches
Notes: Cool-season grower; sow in fall or early spring
