Unlike the more common purple coneflowers, this species brings a warm, sunny hue to borders, wildflower gardens, and pollinator plantings. Its daisy-like blooms appear in early to midsummer and are highly attractive to bees and butterflies, while the seed heads that follow provide interest into fall and winter.

This hardy perennial is well-suited to naturalistic landscapes, meadow gardens, and mixed perennial beds. It tolerates heat and drought once established, making it a low-maintenance choice for sunny sites with well-drained soil. With its unique color and reliable performance, Yellow Coneflower is a valuable addition for gardeners seeking something a little different from standard coneflowers.

Plant Features

Golden-yellow petals with a prominent brown cone

Attracts pollinators such as bees and butterflies

Drought tolerant once established

Provides winter interest with persistent seed heads

Native perennial suitable for wildflower and meadow gardens

Growing Information

Botanical Name: Echinacea paradoxa

Plant Type: Herbaceous perennial

Sunlight: Full sun to light shade

Soil: Well-drained soil; tolerates poor to average fertility

Water Requirements: Moderate; drought tolerant once established

Growth Habit: Upright clumping

USDA Hardiness Zones: 5-8

Bloom Season: Early to midsummer

Mature Height: 24-36 inches

Spacing: 18-24 inches apart

Planting & Care

Sow seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost or directly outdoors in fall after the first frost. Lightly press seeds into the soil surface; do not cover deeply, as light aids germination. Keep the medium consistently moist but not waterlogged at 65-70°F. Germination can be slow and uneven, often taking 2-4 weeks or longer. Once seedlings have several true leaves, transplant them into individual pots and harden off before planting outdoors after the danger of frost has passed.

Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Water newly planted coneflowers regularly during their first growing season to help them establish. Once established, they are relatively carefree and drought tolerant. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continued flowering, or leave seed heads standing for winter interest and bird food. Divide clumps every 3-4 years in spring or fall if plants become overcrowded.

What's Included

200 Yellow Coneflower seeds (Echinacea paradoxa).
