This deciduous tree adds year-round interest to the landscape, from its fragrant flowers to its colorful fruit that persists into winter. It is an excellent choice for specimen plantings, mixed borders, or as a focal point in a garden.

In spring, the tree is covered in abundant pink flowers that attract pollinators. By late summer, the blossoms give way to small, yellow crabapples that are ornamental and can be used for making preserves. The fruit remains on the tree into winter, providing food for birds and visual interest in the dormant season. The Comtesse de Paris crabapple is adaptable to a range of soil types and is relatively low-maintenance once established.

Plant Features

Showy pink blossoms in spring

Bright yellow fruit in fall that persists into winter

Attracts pollinators and birds

Compact size suitable for smaller landscapes

Four-season interest

Growing Information

Botanical Name: Malus 'Comtesse de Paris'

Plant Type: Deciduous ornamental tree

Sunlight: Full sun

Soil: Well-drained, loamy soil

Water Requirements: Moderate; water regularly during establishment

Growth Habit: Upright, spreading

USDA Hardiness Zones: 4-8

Bloom Season: Spring

Mature Height: 15-20 feet

Spacing: 15-20 feet apart

Planting & Care

To grow Comtesse de Paris crabapple from seed, start seeds indoors in late winter after a period of cold stratification. Sow seeds in a well-draining seed-starting mix, barely covering them with soil. Keep the medium moist but not waterlogged and maintain a temperature around 70°F (21°C). Germination can be slow and uneven, so be patient. Once seedlings have developed several sets of true leaves, transplant them into larger pots and gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions before planting in their permanent location.

Choose a planting site with full sun and well-drained soil. Water young trees regularly during the first few years to help them establish a deep root system. Apply a layer of mulch around the base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch away from the trunk. Prune as needed in late winter to maintain shape and remove any dead or crossing branches. Comtesse de Paris crabapple is generally pest and disease resistant, but monitor for common issues like apple scab or aphids.

What's Included

25 Comtesse de Paris Crabapple Seeds

https://blakesflora.com/products/25-comtesse-de-paris-crabapple-seeds-ornamental-tree-with-pink-blossoms-yellow-fruit
