Growing in clumps of arching, grass-like foliage, it brings a relaxed, meadow-like texture to borders, wildflower patches, and naturalized areas, and it returns reliably year after year in suitable climates.
This versatile plant works well in cottage gardens, pollinator plantings, prairie restorations, and rain gardens, where its grassy foliage provides structure even after blooming slows. It pairs nicely with coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, and native grasses, and the spent flowers can be trimmed to encourage a tidier appearance. Start seeds indoors or sow directly in a prepared bed for a low-maintenance perennial display.
Species: Tradescantia ohiensis
Type: Herbaceous perennial
Plant_Habit: Clumping, upright to gently arching
Sun: Full sun to part shade
Soil: Average to medium, well-drained; tolerates clay and dry sites once established
Days_to_Harvest: Not applicable
Zones: 4-9
Germination: 14-30 days with cold moist stratification
Sowing: Surface sow, lightly press into soil; do not bury deeply
Spacing: 12-18 inches
Notes: Native wildflower; blooms may close in afternoon heat
