This red-flowering variety brings vibrant color to mixed borders, foundation plantings, and wildlife gardens. In late spring to early summer, the shrub becomes covered with red flowers that are highly attractive to hummingbirds and butterflies. With its arching branches and compact to medium growth habit, Red Weigela works well as a specimen plant, in mass plantings, or as a flowering hedge.

These plants are shipped as bare root divisions, a cost-effective and reliable way to establish new shrubs. Bare root plants are dormant at shipping and will leaf out and grow vigorously once planted in the garden. Weigela is adaptable to a range of soil types and is relatively low-maintenance once established, making it a great choice for both beginner and experienced gardeners.

Plant Features

Produces showy red, trumpet-shaped flowers in late spring to early summer

Attracts hummingbirds and butterflies to the garden

Deciduous shrub with arching branches and green foliage

Works well in borders, hedges, and wildlife plantings

Bare root form establishes reliably when planted in suitable conditions

Growing Information

Botanical Name: Weigela florida

Plant Type: Deciduous flowering shrub

Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade

Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil

Water Requirements: Medium; water regularly during establishment

Growth Habit: Upright to arching, rounded shrub

Bloom Season: Late spring to early summer

Mature Height: Typically 4 to 6 feet

Spacing: 3 to 5 feet apart

Planting & Care

Plant bare root Weigela in early spring or fall while the plant is still dormant. Soak the roots in water for a few hours before planting. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots without crowding, and position the crown at or slightly below the soil surface. Backfill with native soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly to settle the soil. Apply a layer of mulch around the base, keeping it a few inches away from the stems.

Water regularly during the first growing season to help the shrub establish a strong root system. Once established, Weigela is fairly drought-tolerant but benefits from consistent moisture during dry periods. Prune after flowering to maintain shape and encourage new growth. Fertilize in early spring with a balanced shrub fertilizer if soil fertility is low.

What's Included

You will receive 3 Red Weigela shrubs (Weigela florida) in bare root form.
