This fast-growing climber is ideal for covering fences, trellises, and arbors, or for naturalizing along woodland edges and stream banks. Its delicate blooms appear in abundance from late summer into fall, followed by attractive fluffy seed heads that extend the season of interest.

Beyond its ornamental value, Clematis virginiana is a valuable plant for wildlife. The flowers attract pollinators, and the dense foliage provides cover for birds. This native vine is adaptable to a range of soil conditions and is relatively low-maintenance once established, making it a great choice for native plant gardens, pollinator gardens, and naturalized areas.

Plant Features

Vigorous, twining vine that can quickly cover a trellis or fence

Abundant clusters of small, white, star-shaped flowers in late summer to fall

Attractive, fluffy seed heads persist after bloom

Attracts pollinators and provides habitat for birds

Native to eastern North America and well-suited to naturalized landscapes

Growing Information

Botanical Name: Clematis virginiana

Plant Type: Perennial vine

Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade

Soil: Moist, well-drained soil

Water Requirements: Moderate; keep soil consistently moist

Growth Habit: Climbing, twining vine

USDA Hardiness Zones: 4-8

Bloom Season: Late summer to fall

Mature Height: 10-20 feet

Spacing: 3-5 feet apart

Planting & Care

Sow Clematis virginiana seeds indoors in late winter or directly outdoors in fall after the last frost. For best germination, cold stratify seeds by refrigerating them for 4-6 weeks before sowing. Press seeds lightly into the soil surface and keep them consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination can be slow and uneven, often taking several weeks to a few months. Once seedlings have developed several true leaves, transplant them to their permanent location after hardening off.

Choose a site with full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a deep root system. Mulch around the base to conserve moisture and keep roots cool. Provide a trellis or other support for the vine to climb. Prune in late winter or early spring to control size and remove dead growth. This native vine is generally pest-free and deer-resistant.

What's Included

50 Clematis virginiana seeds.
