Soak the roots in water for a few hours before planting. Choose a site with well-draining, acidic soil and partial shade, especially protection from harsh afternoon sun. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots comfortably, place the tree so the root crown sits at or slightly above soil level, and backfill with native soil. Water thoroughly after planting and apply a 2-3 inch layer of mulch around the base, keeping mulch away from the trunk.

Keep the soil evenly moist during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, the tree is moderately drought tolerant but benefits from supplemental water during dry spells. Prune lightly in late winter to remove dead or crossing branches. Avoid disturbing the shallow root system, and maintain a layer of organic mulch to conserve moisture and moderate soil temperature.

What's Included

One live bare root Flowering Dogwood tree.
