In spring, clusters of bright flowers rise above semi-evergreen foliage, creating a warm, welcoming display in woodland gardens, rain gardens, and naturalized areas. This adaptable native is also a valuable early-season nectar source for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.

Whether you are looking to add color to a shaded border, stabilize a moist slope, or support local wildlife, Golden Ragwort is a low-maintenance and rewarding choice. Its tolerance for wet soil and shade makes it an excellent groundcover or companion for ferns, hostas, and other shade-loving perennials.

Plant Features

Native perennial wildflower with bright golden-yellow, daisy-like blooms in spring

Thrives in moist, shady conditions where many other plants fail

Semi-evergreen foliage provides year-round interest in mild climates

Attracts bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators

Excellent for woodland gardens, rain gardens, and naturalized plantings

Growing Information

Botanical Name: Packera aurea (formerly Senecio aureus)

Plant Type: Herbaceous perennial

Sunlight: Partial shade to full shade; tolerates more sun in consistently moist soil

Soil: Moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil; tolerates wet conditions

Water Requirements: Medium to high; keep soil consistently moist

Growth Habit: Clump-forming, spreads by rhizomes to form colonies

Bloom Season: Spring

Mature Height: 12–30 inches

Spacing: 12–18 inches apart

Planting & Care

Sow Golden Ragwort seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost or directly in the garden in early spring or fall. Press seeds lightly into the soil surface; do not cover deeply, as light aids germination. Keep the soil consistently moist and maintain a temperature around 65–70°F. Germination typically occurs in 2–4 weeks, though it can be slower and irregular. Once seedlings have several sets of true leaves, transplant them into individual pots or harden them off for outdoor planting.

In the garden, choose a spot with partial to full shade and moist, rich soil. Water regularly during the first growing season to help plants establish. Once established, Golden Ragwort is relatively low-maintenance; divide clumps every few years to maintain vigor and control spread. Remove spent flowers if you prefer a tidier look, or allow them to self-sow for a naturalized effect.

What's Included

This listing includes 75 Golden Ragwort seeds (Packera aurea).

https://blakesflora.com/products/golden-ragwort-seeds-75-packera-aurea-native-wildflower-for-shade-gardens
