This hardy wildflower brings vertical interest and a soft, natural look to prairies, meadow plantings, and cottage-style borders. Its late-season flowers are a valuable nectar source for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, making it an excellent choice for pollinator gardens and wildlife-friendly landscapes.

Obedient Plant gets its common name from its flexible stems, which allow individual flowers to be gently bent into place and stay there temporarily. It spreads by rhizomes to form attractive colonies, filling in sunny borders and rain gardens with lush green foliage topped by cheerful pink blooms from midsummer into fall.

Plant Features

Native perennial wildflower with tall spikes of pink, tubular blooms

Long bloom season from summer into early fall

Attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds

Spreads by rhizomes to form naturalized colonies

Excellent for prairie plantings, meadows, and rain gardens

Growing Information

Botanical Name: Physostegia virginiana

Plant Type: Herbaceous perennial

Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade

Soil: Moist, well-drained soil; tolerates clay and wet sites

Water Requirements: Medium to high; keep soil consistently moist

Growth Habit: Upright, clump-forming, spreads by rhizomes

USDA Hardiness Zones: 3 to 9

Bloom Season: Summer to early fall

Mature Height: 2 to 4 feet

Spacing: 18 to 24 inches apart

Planting & Care

Sow Obedient Plant seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost or directly in the garden after the danger of frost has passed. Press seeds lightly into the soil surface, as they need light to germinate. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged, and maintain a temperature around 65 to 70°F. Germination typically occurs in 14 to 30 days. Once seedlings have several sets of true leaves, harden them off and transplant outdoors after the last frost.

Choose a sunny to partially shaded location with moist, well-drained soil. Water regularly during the first growing season to help plants establish. Obedient Plant can spread aggressively in ideal conditions; divide clumps every 2 to 3 years or plant in containers to control spread. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continued flowering, or leave seed heads for winter interest and birds.

What's Included

50 Physostegia virginiana seeds for planting.

https://blakesflora.com/products/physostegia-virginiana-50-seeds-obedient-plant-pink-native-perennial-for-pollinator-gardens
