This deciduous shrub typically grows 3 to 6 feet tall and wide, forming a dense, rounded habit that works well in rain gardens, pond edges, and other moist landscape areas. In late spring to summer, it produces fragrant, single pink blooms with yellow centers that attract pollinators and later develop into red rose hips enjoyed by wildlife.

Swamp Rose is an excellent choice for naturalized plantings, native plant gardens, and erosion control along streams or drainage areas. Its tolerance for wet conditions and its wildlife value make it a functional and attractive addition to challenging sites.

Plant Features

Native North American shrub rose

Fragrant single pink flowers with yellow centers

Tolerates wet and poorly drained soils

Produces red rose hips that attract birds

Dense, rounded growth habit

Growing Information

Botanical Name: Rosa palustris

Plant Type: Deciduous shrub

Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade

Soil: Moist to wet, well-drained to poorly drained

Water Requirements: Moderate to high; prefers consistently moist soil

Growth Habit: Upright, rounded shrub

USDA Hardiness Zones: 4-9

Bloom Season: Late spring to summer

Mature Height: 3-6 feet

Spacing: 3-5 feet apart

Planting & Care

To grow Swamp Rose from seeds, start indoors in late winter or sow directly outdoors in fall. For indoor sowing, scarify seeds by nicking the seed coat or soaking in warm water for 24 hours, then cold stratify for 60-90 days in the refrigerator before sowing. Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep in a moist seed-starting mix, keep at 65-75°F, and maintain even moisture. Germination can be slow and uneven, often taking several weeks to months. Once seedlings have several true leaves, transplant them into individual pots and grow on until large enough to set out.

Choose a planting site with full sun to partial shade and moist to wet soil. Water regularly during establishment and during dry spells. Mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Prune lightly as needed to maintain shape and remove dead wood. Swamp Rose is generally low-maintenance once established.

What's Included

30 Rosa palustris (Swamp Rose) seeds.

https://blakesflora.com/products/rosa-palustris-swamp-rose-seeds-30-native-pink-flowering-shrub-seeds
