The Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) is a native North American shade tree valued for its rapid growth, wildlife benefits, and attractive spring flowers. This deciduous tree produces clusters of small white blooms in spring, followed by dark, cherry-like fruits that are relished by birds and other wildlife. Its glossy green foliage turns yellow in fall, adding seasonal interest to the landscape. Black Cherry is an excellent choice for native plant gardens, woodland edges, and wildlife habitats.

As a young bare root tree, it establishes quickly when planted in the right conditions. It can be used as a specimen tree, in reforestation projects, or as part of a pollinator-friendly garden. Its adaptability and ecological value make it a rewarding addition to larger properties and naturalized areas.

Planting & Care

Plant your bare root Black Cherry tree as soon as possible after arrival. Soak the roots in water for a few hours before planting. Choose a site with full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Dig a hole wide enough to accommodate the spread roots, place the tree at the same depth it grew in the nursery, and backfill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and apply a layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk.

During the first growing season, water regularly to help the tree establish. Once established, Black Cherry is relatively low-maintenance. Prune as needed in late winter to remove dead or crossing branches and to shape the tree. Monitor for common pests and diseases, and provide supplemental water during prolonged dry periods.
