The Tulip Poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) is a fast-growing deciduous shade tree prized for its tall, straight trunk and distinctive tulip-shaped leaves. In late spring to early summer, it produces greenish-yellow, tulip-like flowers that attract pollinators, followed by cone-like seed clusters. Its golden fall foliage adds seasonal interest to large landscapes.

This bare root starter plant is an economical way to establish a shade tree in a spacious yard, park, or naturalized area. With its rapid growth rate, the Tulip Poplar can quickly provide shade and vertical accent in the landscape.

Planting & Care

Plant your bare root Tulip Poplar in early spring or late fall while it is dormant. Soak the roots in water for a few hours before planting. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots without bending them, and position the crown at or slightly above soil level. Backfill with native soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly to settle the soil. Apply a layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk.

Water regularly during the first growing season to help the tree establish a strong root system. Once established, Tulip Poplar is relatively low-maintenance but benefits from consistent moisture during dry periods. Prune only to remove dead or damaged branches, as the tree has a naturally pleasing shape. Protect young trees from deer and rodents if needed.
