The Gaeta Olive is a classic Italian olive variety prized for its small, dark, flavorful fruit and its graceful, silvery-green foliage. Native to the Mediterranean region, this evergreen tree brings a touch of old-world charm to gardens, patios, and sunny landscapes. Whether you're an experienced grower or a curious gardener, these seeds offer the opportunity to cultivate your own olive tree from scratch.

Gaeta olives are traditionally used for oil production and are also enjoyed as table olives when properly cured. The tree itself is a beautiful ornamental, with a gnarled trunk and narrow leaves that shimmer in the breeze. It can be grown in the ground in warm climates or in containers elsewhere, making it a versatile choice for many settings.

Planting & Care

To grow Gaeta olive from seed, start by scarifying the seeds (lightly nicking or sanding the hard outer shell) and soaking them in warm water for 24 hours. Then, stratify the seeds by placing them in a moist medium in a sealed bag in the refrigerator for 4-6 weeks. Sow seeds about 1/2 inch deep in a well-draining seed-starting mix, keep moist but not waterlogged, and provide warmth (around 70-80°F). Germination can be slow and uneven, taking several weeks to months.

Once seedlings have several sets of true leaves, transplant them into larger pots or into the garden after the last frost. Choose a sunny location with excellent drainage. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a deep root system, then reduce frequency as the tree matures. Olive trees are generally low-maintenance but benefit from occasional pruning to shape the canopy and remove dead wood. In cooler climates, grow in containers and move indoors during winter.
