Planting & Care
Sow zinnia seeds outdoors after the last frost date, once the soil has warmed to at least 60°F (15°C). Plant seeds ¼ inch deep and keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which typically occurs in 7-14 days. Thin seedlings to stand 9-12 inches apart to allow good air circulation. For earlier blooms, start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost and transplant after danger of frost has passed.
Zinnias are low-maintenance once established. Water regularly, preferably at the base of the plant, to prevent foliage diseases. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued blooming. Fertilize lightly if soil is poor. These plants are generally pest-resistant and deer-resistant, making them a reliable choice for busy gardeners.
