Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys nigra) is a striking running bamboo grown for its distinctive jet-black mature culms and fine green foliage. It adds elegant vertical structure to gardens and containers, and the dark canes make a handsome feature in mixed borders and Asian-inspired plantings.

The new shoots emerge green and gradually darken to near-black as they mature, giving the grove a two-toned effect through the season. The slender leaves cast light shade, and the canes are often used in crafts, garden stakes, and decorative arrangements. As a running bamboo, it spreads by underground rhizomes and is best situated where its growth can be managed or contained.
