Swamp Sunflower (Helianthus angustifolius) is a tall, clump-forming native perennial known for its late-season display of bright golden-yellow blooms. This heirloom wildflower brings a bold, natural look to meadows, pollinator gardens, rain gardens, and the back of perennial borders. Its narrow, grass-like foliage and upright habit make it a strong vertical accent, while the daisy-like flowers provide a valuable late source of nectar for bees and butterflies.

Native to the eastern United States, Swamp Sunflower is prized for blooming in late summer and fall when many other perennials have finished. It tolerates moist to wet soils and is an excellent choice for low-lying areas, pond edges, and naturalized plantings. With 100 seeds, you can establish a generous patch or share plants with fellow gardeners.

Planting & Care

Sow Swamp Sunflower seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost, or direct sow outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Press seeds lightly into the soil surface and keep them moist, as light aids germination. Seedlings can be transplanted once they have several sets of true leaves. Space plants 18 to 24 inches apart in a sunny location with moist soil.

Once established, Swamp Sunflower is relatively low-maintenance. Water regularly during the first growing season to help roots settle in. In subsequent years, it can tolerate drier conditions but performs best with consistent moisture. Cut back stems in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Divide clumps every few years if they become overcrowded.
