Penstemon humilis, commonly known as Low Beardtongue, is a compact perennial wildflower native to the western United States. It forms low cushions of narrow, gray-green leaves and produces spikes of small, tubular blue-purple flowers in late spring to early summer. This hardy species is well-suited to rock gardens, alpine troughs, and xeriscapes, where its drought tolerance and pollinator-friendly blooms are highly valued.

Low Beardtongue attracts bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, making it a welcome addition to wildlife gardens. Its modest size and neat habit also make it a good choice for border edges and container plantings.

Planting & Care

Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or directly outdoors in fall. Lightly press seeds into the soil surface; do not cover deeply, as light aids germination. Keep soil moist but not waterlogged. Germination can be slow and uneven; stratification (cold moist treatment) for 4-6 weeks may improve results. Transplant seedlings after the danger of frost has passed, spacing them 12-18 inches apart in a sunny, well-drained location.

Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a deep root system. Once established, Low Beardtongue is drought tolerant and requires little supplemental water. Avoid overwatering and heavy, poorly drained soils. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage rebloom and maintain a tidy appearance. Mulch lightly around plants to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch away from the crown to prevent rot.
