Planting & Care

Sow seeds directly outdoors after the last frost date, planting about 1 inch deep and 6 inches apart, then thin to 18-24 inches apart once seedlings are established. Sunflowers prefer full sun and well-drained soil. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which typically occurs in 7-14 days. Once plants are established, water deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth. Tall varieties may benefit from staking in windy areas. Deadhead spent blooms to prolong flowering, or leave seed heads for birds.
