American Hazelnut (Corylus americana) is a native deciduous shrub that offers multi-season interest. In late winter to early spring, it produces long, showy catkins. In late summer, it yields small, flavorful hazelnuts that are enjoyed by both people and wildlife. Its dense, rounded form and green foliage turn attractive shades of yellow and red in fall, making it a valuable addition to hedgerows, wildlife plantings, and edible landscapes.

These bare root trees are 6-12 inches tall and are ready to plant. They are shipped dormant, which is the ideal state for bare root transplanting. With proper care, they will establish quickly and begin growing in their new location.

Planting & Care

Plant bare root trees as soon as possible after arrival. Soak the roots in water for 1-2 hours before planting. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots without crowding, and set the tree at the same depth it grew in the nursery. Backfill with native soil, tamp gently to remove air pockets, and water thoroughly. Apply a layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk.

Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, American Hazelnut is relatively low-maintenance. Prune as needed to maintain shape and remove any dead or damaged branches. These trees are self-fertile but produce better crops when planted with another hazelnut for cross-pollination.
