Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) is a majestic native shade tree prized for its rich, dark wood and flavorful nuts. These 2-foot saplings are ready to establish in your landscape, eventually growing into a large, long-lived tree that provides beauty, shade, and a harvest of edible nuts. Ideal for homesteads, wildlife plantings, and spacious yards, black walnut makes a rewarding long-term investment for any grower.

Each sapling is shipped as a bare root plant, a common and effective way to transplant deciduous trees during dormancy. With proper planting and care, these young trees will develop deep taproots and vigorous growth, becoming a productive nut tree for future generations.

Planting & Care

Plant bare root saplings in early spring or late fall while dormant. Soak the roots for a few hours before planting. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots without bending them, set the tree at the same depth it grew previously, and backfill with native soil. Water thoroughly to settle the soil and eliminate air pockets. Apply a layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk.

Black walnut grows best in full sun and deep, well-drained soil. Water regularly during the first few years to help establish a strong root system. Once established, the tree is relatively drought-tolerant. Note that black walnut produces juglone, a compound that can affect certain sensitive plants, so choose companion plantings with care. Minimal pruning is needed beyond removing dead or damaged branches.
