Chinese Chestnut (Castanea mollissima) is a deciduous nut tree valued for its sweet, edible chestnuts and attractive, dark green foliage. Native to China, it has been cultivated for centuries and is well-suited to home orchards and edible landscapes. These live bare root plants are 1-2 feet tall and ready to establish in your garden.

Chinese Chestnut trees are known for their blight resistance compared to American chestnut, making them a reliable choice for nut production in many regions. They produce spiny burs that open in fall to reveal glossy brown nuts. The trees also offer wildlife value and can serve as shade trees or specimen plantings.

Planting & Care

Plant bare root chestnut trees in early spring or late fall while dormant. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots, place the tree at the same depth it grew in the nursery, and backfill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and apply mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk.

Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Once established, Chinese Chestnut is relatively low-maintenance. Prune as needed to maintain shape and remove dead or damaged branches. These trees are mostly self-fertile but planting two or more can improve nut production.
