Rose of Sharon (Hibiscus syriacus) is a deciduous flowering shrub prized for its abundant, hollyhock-like blooms that appear in mid to late summer when many other shrubs have finished flowering. Each flower lasts only a day, but new buds open continuously over a long season, creating a colorful display in borders, hedges, and mixed shrub plantings. The plants also attract pollinators and provide garden interest well into autumn.

These bare root shrubs are shipped ready for planting, with two plants included so you can create a matched pair or start a small hedge. Rose of Sharon is adaptable and easy to grow in most average garden soils, making it a reliable choice for both new and experienced gardeners.

Planting & Care

Plant bare root shrubs as soon as possible after arrival. Soak the roots in water for a few hours before planting. Choose a site with full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots without crowding, place the plant at the same depth it grew previously, and backfill with soil. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged until new growth appears.

Once established, Rose of Sharon is relatively drought tolerant. Apply a layer of mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, and prune in late winter or early spring to remove dead wood and shape the plant. Fertilize lightly in spring if growth is weak. These shrubs generally require little maintenance beyond regular watering during dry spells.
