Planting & Care

Sow California poppy seeds directly outdoors in early spring or fall, as they resent transplanting. Scatter seeds on the soil surface and lightly press them in; do not cover deeply, as light aids germination. Keep the soil evenly moist until seedlings emerge, then thin to the recommended spacing. These poppies thrive in poor to average soil and require little care. Water occasionally during prolonged dry spells, but avoid overwatering.

For best results, choose a sunny location with good drainage. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued blooming, or allow some flowers to go to seed for self-sowing.
