Planting & Care

Sow 'Desert Sun' lupine seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or directly outdoors in early spring after danger of frost has passed. Soak seeds in warm water for 24 hours before sowing to help soften the seed coat and improve germination. Press seeds into the soil surface and cover lightly with about 1/8 inch of soil, as light aids germination. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged at a temperature of 65-70°F (18-21°C). Germination typically occurs in 14-30 days.

Once seedlings have developed several true leaves, transplant them outdoors after hardening off. Space plants 12-18 inches apart in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Water regularly during dry spells, but avoid overwatering. Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage additional flowering and prevent self-seeding if desired. In hot climates, provide afternoon shade to help plants thrive.
