Oxytropis lambertii, commonly known as Showy Locoweed or Lambert's Crazyweed, is a native perennial wildflower of the North American prairies. It produces dense spikes of vibrant purple, pink, or occasionally white pea-like flowers in late spring to early summer. Its silvery-green, hairy foliage forms a low clump that adds texture to rock gardens, native plantings, and drought-tolerant landscapes. This species is valued for its ability to thrive in poor, rocky soils and its role in supporting native pollinators.

Showy Locoweed is an excellent choice for xeriscaping, prairie restorations, and pollinator gardens. Its deep taproot makes it extremely drought tolerant once established, and its attractive flowers provide a splash of color in challenging sites.

Planting & Care

To improve germination, scarify seeds by lightly rubbing them with sandpaper or soaking in warm water for 24 hours. Cold stratify by placing seeds in a moist medium in the refrigerator for 4-6 weeks before sowing. Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or directly outdoors in fall. Press seeds into the soil surface and cover lightly, as light aids germination. Keep soil consistently moist until seedlings emerge, which may take 2-4 weeks.

Once established, Showy Locoweed requires minimal care. Water sparingly, allowing soil to dry between waterings. Avoid overwatering or rich soils, which can cause root rot. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage reblooming and prevent self-seeding if desired. This plant is toxic to livestock if ingested, so site it away from grazing areas.
