Wild Perennial Lupine (Lupinus) brings a bold, cottage-garden look to sunny borders and meadow plantings. This mixed-color seed selection produces tall spikes of pea-like flowers in a range of shades, attracting bees and other pollinators. The palmate green foliage adds texture even after bloom, making lupines a useful vertical accent in perennial beds and wildflower areas.

Lupines are classic cool-season perennials that perform best where summers are not excessively hot. They can be grown as short-lived perennials or reseed in favorable conditions. The mixed colors create a naturalized look when planted in groups or scattered through a pollinator garden.

Planting & Care

Lupine seeds benefit from scarification and a cold-moist stratification period to improve germination. For spring planting, scarify seeds by nicking the seed coat or soaking in warm water for 24 hours, then stratify in a moist medium in the refrigerator for 4–6 weeks before sowing. Sow seeds about 1/4 inch deep in a well-drained seed-starting mix. Keep the medium consistently moist but not soggy, and provide bright light. Germination can be slow and uneven.

Transplant seedlings once they have several true leaves and after the danger of frost has passed. Choose a sunny site with well-drained soil. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce frequency as plants settle in. Mulch lightly to conserve moisture and suppress weeds, but keep mulch away from the crown. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued bloom and prevent unwanted self-seeding, or allow some seed heads to mature for naturalizing.
