Hymenoxys hoopesii, commonly known as Orange Mountain Daisy or Sneezeweed, is a hardy perennial wildflower native to the mountainous regions of western North America. It produces bright golden-orange daisy-like blooms with prominent central cones, creating a cheerful display from early to midsummer. This rugged wildflower is well-suited to rock gardens, native plant landscapes, pollinator gardens, and xeriscapes, where its vibrant color and easy-going nature are highly valued.

Orange Mountain Daisy forms clumps of lance-shaped, gray-green foliage that remain attractive throughout the growing season. The flowers rise on sturdy stems above the foliage, attracting bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects. Its tolerance for poor soils and drought once established makes it an excellent choice for low-water gardens and high-altitude plantings.

Planting & Care

Sow Hymenoxys hoopesii seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or directly outdoors in late spring after danger of frost has passed. Press seeds lightly into the soil surface; do not cover deeply, as light aids germination. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged until seedlings emerge. Once seedlings have several true leaves, transplant them into individual pots or harden them off for garden planting.

Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Orange Mountain Daisy tolerates poor, rocky soils and is an excellent candidate for rock gardens, borders, and wildflower meadows. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a deep root system. After establishment, water only during extended dry periods. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage additional blooms and maintain a tidy appearance. Divide clumps every few years in early spring or fall to rejuvenate plants.
