5 Seeds Butternut Tree Juglans cinerea Hardy Nut Tree

Butternut (Juglans cinerea) is a cold-hardy deciduous nut tree native to eastern North America, valued for its deeply furrowed bark, large pinnate leaves, and sweet, richly flavored nuts. It makes an impressive shade tree for spacious landscapes and offers an attractive, wildlife-friendly presence across the seasons.

Also known as white walnut, the butternut produces elongated nuts with thick, hard shells and buttery-rich kernels that are prized for baking, candying, and snacking. The tree's yellow-green foliage turns golden in autumn, adding ornamental interest to yards and orchards. It grows best in deep, well-drained soil with full sun, and its spreading canopy provides generous shade once established.
