Planting & Care

For best results, sow Alison Louise Sweet Pea seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost, or direct sow outdoors in early spring once the soil is workable. Soak seeds in water for 24 hours before planting to help soften the seed coat and improve germination. Plant seeds about 1 inch deep in a sunny location with well-drained soil. Provide a trellis or other support for the vines to climb.

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulch around the base to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize lightly when plants are young, and deadhead spent flowers regularly to encourage continued blooming. Sweet peas are cool-season growers and may decline in the heat of summer; plant them where they receive some afternoon shade in warmer climates.
