Planting & Care

Plant your Bear's Breeches in a location with well-drained soil and partial to full sun. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and set the plant at the same depth it was growing in the pot. Water thoroughly after planting and keep the soil consistently moist during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Apply a layer of mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Once established, Acanthus mollis is relatively drought-tolerant but performs best with regular watering. Remove spent flower spikes to encourage additional blooms and tidy the plant. In late winter or early spring, cut back old foliage to make way for new growth. Divide clumps every few years to maintain vigor.
