Antennaria parvifolia, commonly known as pussytoes, is a low-growing native perennial prized for its silvery-gray foliage and unique, fuzzy flower heads that resemble tiny cat paws. This hardy groundcover forms a dense, mat-like spread that works beautifully in rock gardens, native plant landscapes, pollinator gardens, and dry border edges. Its understated texture and color provide excellent contrast against green-leaved plants and gravel mulches.

Pussytoes is a drought-tolerant wildflower that thrives in lean, well-drained soils and full sun. It is an excellent choice for xeriscaping, green roofs, and low-maintenance meadow plantings. The silvery foliage remains attractive throughout the growing season, and the spring blooms attract small pollinators and beneficial insects.

Planting & Care

Sow Antennaria parvifolia seeds on the surface of a well-drained seed-starting mix, as light is needed for germination. Press seeds gently into the soil without covering them deeply. Keep the medium consistently moist but not waterlogged, and maintain a temperature of around 65-70°F. Germination can be slow and irregular; patience is required. Once seedlings have several true leaves, transplant them into individual pots or directly into the garden after the last frost.

Pussytoes prefers lean, dry conditions and does not tolerate rich, wet soils. Water newly planted seedlings regularly until established, then reduce watering to occasional deep soakings. Mulch with gravel or coarse sand to keep the foliage dry and prevent crown rot. Divide clumps every few years to maintain vigor and encourage spread.
