Planting & Care

Apple seeds benefit from cold stratification to encourage germination. A common method is to place seeds in a moist paper towel inside a sealed bag and refrigerate for several weeks before sowing. After stratification, sow seeds in a well-drained seed-starting mix, barely covering them with soil. Keep the medium consistently moist but not waterlogged, and provide bright light once seedlings emerge.

Once seedlings are large enough and weather permits, transplant them into larger containers or a nursery bed. Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil for eventual planting. Water regularly during establishment, especially in dry periods. Young apple trees may need protection from extreme weather and pests as they grow.
