Planting & Care

Sow Bibb lettuce seeds directly in the garden as soon as the soil can be worked in spring, or start indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost. For a continuous supply, sow seeds every 2-3 weeks until early summer, then resume in late summer for a fall crop. Scatter seeds thinly and cover lightly with soil, as lettuce needs light to germinate. Keep the soil evenly moist during germination, which typically takes 7-14 days.

Thin seedlings to the recommended spacing to allow heads to develop properly. Water regularly to prevent bolting and keep leaves tender. Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Harvest outer leaves as needed or cut entire heads when they reach full size. Lettuce prefers cooler temperatures and may bolt in hot weather; provide afternoon shade in warmer climates.
