Planting & Care

Sow Black Seeded Simpson lettuce seeds directly in the garden as soon as the soil can be worked in spring, or start indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Plant seeds about 1/4 inch deep and keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which typically occurs in 7-14 days. Thin seedlings to 6-8 inches apart to allow for proper growth.

For a continuous harvest, sow seeds every 2-3 weeks. Lettuce prefers cool weather and will benefit from partial shade in hotter climates. Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged, and mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Harvest outer leaves when they are young and tender, or cut the entire plant at the base.
