The Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) is a majestic native shade tree prized for its rich, dark wood and flavorful nuts. Growing 2-3 feet tall as a bare root plant, it establishes readily and develops into a long-lived specimen with a broad, rounded canopy. Its deep green, pinnate leaves cast cool shade in summer, while the nuts attract wildlife and offer a rewarding harvest for home growers. This tree is an excellent choice for large landscapes, windbreaks, or edible forest gardens.

Hardy in USDA zones 4-9, Black Walnut adapts to a range of climates and soil types. It is known for its allelopathic properties, so choose a planting site away from sensitive garden plants. With proper care, this bare root tree will grow into a valuable and productive addition to your property.

Planting & Care

Plant your bare root Black Walnut tree as soon as possible after arrival. Soak the roots in water for a few hours before planting. Choose a sunny location with deep, well-drained soil. Dig a hole wide enough to spread the roots comfortably, place the tree at the same depth it grew in the nursery, and backfill with native soil. Water thoroughly to settle the soil and eliminate air pockets. Apply a layer of mulch around the base, keeping it away from the trunk.

Water regularly during the first year to encourage deep root growth. Once established, Black Walnut is relatively drought-tolerant. Prune only to remove dead or damaged branches, as the tree bleeds heavily if pruned in late winter or spring. Be mindful that Black Walnut roots release juglone, which can inhibit the growth of certain plants; site accordingly.
