  • Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade
  • Soil: Rich, well-drained soil with good organic matter
  • Water Requirements: Consistent moisture; avoid waterlogging
  • Growth Habit: Upright with a central head and side shoots
  • Spacing: Allow roughly 18 to 24 inches between plants

Planting & Care

Sow Calabrese seeds indoors in trays or modules about 6 to 8 weeks before the last expected frost, or direct sow outdoors once the soil has warmed and can be worked. Cover seeds lightly with about 1/4 inch of soil and keep the seedbed evenly moist until germination. Thin or transplant seedlings so plants have room to develop strong roots and sturdy stems.

Grow broccoli in a sunny spot with fertile, well-drained soil and water regularly, especially during head formation. Mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Harvest the central head while florets are tight and before yellow flowers open, then continue picking side shoots for an extended harvest. Watch for common cabbage-family pests and rotate crops to support healthy growth.
