The Chinese Chestnut Tree (Castanea mollissima) is a valuable nut-producing tree that offers both ornamental beauty and a harvest of sweet, edible chestnuts. Native to China, this species is well-regarded for its resistance to chestnut blight and its adaptability to a range of growing conditions. It makes an excellent addition to home orchards, edible landscapes, and wildlife gardens.

Chinese Chestnut trees typically grow to a mature height of 40 to 60 feet with a similar spread, forming a rounded canopy that provides ample shade. In late spring to early summer, they produce long, creamy-white catkins that are both ornamental and fragrant. The nuts mature in spiny burs and are ready for harvest in early to mid-fall. When planted with a compatible pollinator, Chinese Chestnut trees can produce reliable crops of flavorful nuts that are ideal for roasting, baking, and fresh eating.

Planting & Care

Plant your bare root Chinese Chestnut tree in early spring or late fall while it is dormant. Choose a site with full sun and well-drained soil. Dig a hole wide enough to accommodate the roots spread out, and position the tree at the same depth it grew previously. Backfill with native soil, firm gently, and water thoroughly to settle the soil and eliminate air pockets. Apply a layer of mulch around the base, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk.

Water regularly during the first growing season to help the tree establish a strong root system. Once established, Chinese Chestnut is relatively drought-tolerant but benefits from supplemental watering during dry spells, especially when nuts are developing. Prune lightly in late winter to remove dead or crossing branches and to maintain a strong structure. For best nut production, plant at least two different Chinese Chestnut varieties for cross-pollination.
