Fava beans, also known as broad beans, are a classic cool-season legume prized for their large, nutritious seeds and nitrogen-fixing ability. These heirloom seeds produce vigorous plants with white flowers and sturdy pods, making them a valuable addition to vegetable gardens and sustainable growing systems.

Fava beans are easy to grow and perform best in cooler weather, providing an early harvest of fresh shelling beans. They can be used as a cover crop to improve soil health or enjoyed as a delicious homegrown vegetable.

Planting & Care

Sow fava bean seeds directly outdoors in early spring or fall, about 1-2 inches deep and 6-8 inches apart. They prefer cooler temperatures and can tolerate light frost. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Provide support for taller varieties if needed.

Fava beans are relatively low-maintenance. Mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Harvest pods when they are full and seeds are plump, usually 70-90 days after planting. For cover crop use, till under before seed set to add organic matter and nitrogen to the soil.
