Glandularia bipinnatifida, commonly known as Dakota Vervain, is a native perennial prized for its clusters of vibrant purple flowers that bloom from late spring through summer. This low-growing wildflower brings a splash of color to rock gardens, borders, and native plant landscapes, and its nectar-rich blooms attract butterflies and other pollinators.

Dakota Vervain is well-suited to sunny, well-drained sites and tolerates heat and drought once established. Its spreading habit makes it an excellent choice for groundcover, edging, or container plantings. Grow it alongside other native perennials for a naturalistic, low-maintenance garden display.

Planting & Care

Sow Dakota Vervain seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or directly outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Press seeds lightly into the soil surface; do not cover deeply, as light aids germination. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged until seedlings emerge. Once seedlings have several true leaves, thin or transplant them to the recommended spacing.

Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Water regularly during the first growing season to help plants establish, then reduce watering as they become drought tolerant. Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continued blooming. In colder zones, apply a light mulch in winter to protect the crown.
