Italian Lavender (Lavandula stoechas) is a distinctive lavender species prized for its fragrant purple flower spikes topped with showy sterile bracts that resemble small butterfly wings. Also known as French lavender or butterfly lavender, this compact evergreen shrub brings long-lasting color and a rich, sweet scent to herb gardens, borders, containers, and pollinator-friendly landscapes.

The gray-green foliage is aromatic when brushed, and the dense flower heads appear from late spring into summer, attracting bees and butterflies. Italian Lavender works beautifully in Mediterranean-style plantings, rock gardens, patio pots, and dried flower arrangements, offering both ornamental appeal and classic lavender fragrance.

Planting & Care

Sow Italian Lavender seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost or directly outdoors after danger of frost has passed. Press seeds lightly into the soil surface and barely cover, as light aids germination. Keep the growing medium evenly moist but not soggy at around 65-70°F. Germination can be slow and uneven, so patience is required.

Once seedlings have several sets of true leaves, transplant to individual pots or into the garden in full sun and well-drained soil. Water young plants regularly during establishment, then reduce watering as plants mature. Avoid heavy, wet soils and overhead watering to help prevent root problems. Light pruning after flowering encourages a tidy shape and repeat blooms.
