Java Fern is a popular freshwater aquarium plant known for its distinctive, textured green leaves and its ability to thrive in a wide range of aquarium conditions. Its slow-growing, undemanding nature makes it a favorite among beginners and experienced aquarists alike. Whether used as a midground accent, attached to driftwood or rocks, or placed in a nano tank, Java Fern adds a natural, lush look to any aquascape.

This plant is a true aquatic fern that does not require special lighting or CO2 supplementation to grow well. It is a resilient species that can adapt to low-light setups and is often kept in community tanks with fish and invertebrates. Because it is a slow grower, it requires minimal pruning and maintenance, making it an excellent choice for low-tech planted aquariums.

Planting & Care

Java Fern is best planted by attaching the rhizome to driftwood, rocks, or other aquarium decor using thread or aquarium-safe glue. Do not bury the rhizome in the substrate, as this can cause it to rot. Once attached, the plant will slowly anchor itself and begin to grow new leaves. It can also be placed in a substrate, but the rhizome must remain above the surface.

This plant is very forgiving and does well in a variety of water conditions. Regular water changes and stable parameters will keep it healthy. It does not require fertilizers or CO2, though occasional liquid fertilization can promote faster growth. Prune dead or yellowing leaves as needed to maintain appearance.
