Cover with soil gradually as shoots emerge, eventually filling the trench. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Avoid harvesting spears the first year to allow plants to develop.

In subsequent years, fertilize in early spring and keep the bed weed-free. Cut back dead foliage in late fall or early winter. With proper care, your asparagus bed will provide delicious spears for many years.
