Planting & Care
Plant asparagus crowns in early spring after the danger of frost has passed. Dig a trench about 6-8 inches deep and wide enough to accommodate the roots. Place the crowns in the trench with the buds pointing upward and the roots spread out. Cover with 2-3 inches of soil initially, and gradually fill the trench as the plants grow, being careful not to bury the foliage. Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system.
Do not harvest spears during the first year after planting to allow the plants to develop. In subsequent years, harvest spears when they are about 6-8 inches tall and before the tips begin to open. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring and keep the bed free of weeds. In late fall, cut back the dead foliage and mulch to protect the crowns over winter.
