Lance Leaf Coreopsis (Coreopsis lanceolata) is a cheerful North American native wildflower prized for its bright golden-yellow daisy-like blooms. Its cheerful flowers rise above lance-shaped green foliage from late spring into summer, creating a lively display in borders, meadow plantings, and pollinator gardens. This easy-going perennial is a favorite of bees and butterflies and makes an excellent cut flower.

Lance Leaf Coreopsis is adaptable and low-maintenance, thriving in full sun and well-drained soil. It tolerates poor, sandy, or rocky soils and is drought-tolerant once established, making it a smart choice for water-wise landscapes and naturalized areas.

Planting & Care

Sow Lance Leaf Coreopsis seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost or directly outdoors in spring after the danger of frost has passed. Press seeds lightly into the soil surface; they need light to germinate. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which typically occurs in 14–21 days at 65–70°F (18–21°C). Once seedlings have several true leaves, thin or transplant them to their final spacing.

Choose a sunny location with well-drained soil. Water regularly during the first growing season to help plants establish, then reduce watering as they become drought-tolerant. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continued flowering and prevent unwanted self-seeding. In late winter or early spring, cut back old foliage to promote fresh growth.
