Lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) is a perennial herb in the mint family, prized for its bright green, lemon-scented leaves and its usefulness in herb gardens, borders, and container plantings. This easy-to-grow herb brings a fresh citrus aroma to the garden and can be used in teas, culinary dishes, and homemade herbal products. Its compact, bushy habit and tolerance of partial shade make it a versatile addition to many garden settings.

Lemon balm is a favorite among gardeners for its vigorous growth and attractive foliage. It can be grown in herb beds, pollinator gardens, or as a fragrant ground cover. The plant produces small white to pale yellow flowers in summer that attract bees and other beneficial insects.

Planting & Care

Sow lemon balm seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost or directly in the garden after the danger of frost has passed. Press seeds lightly into the soil surface; they need light to germinate. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Germination typically occurs in 14–21 days at 65–70°F (18–21°C). Once seedlings have several sets of true leaves, thin or transplant them to 12–18 inches apart.

Lemon balm prefers rich, well-drained soil and regular watering, especially during dry spells. Mulch around plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Trim plants after flowering to encourage bushy growth and prevent self-seeding. In colder zones, apply a layer of mulch in winter to protect roots.
