Long Island Brussels Sprouts are a classic heirloom variety prized by gardeners for their reliable performance and cold hardiness. This open-pollinated selection produces sturdy stalks loaded with small, flavorful sprouts that are perfect for roasting, steaming, or freezing. Long Island is well-suited to fall and winter gardens, where light frosts enhance the natural sweetness of the sprouts.

Whether you're growing in raised beds, containers, or traditional garden rows, these seeds offer a rewarding harvest for both beginner and experienced gardeners. The plants develop a robust, upright habit and can be harvested over an extended period, making them a valuable addition to the home vegetable garden.

Planting & Care

Sow Long Island Brussels Sprouts seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost date, or directly in the garden after the danger of frost has passed. Plant seeds 1/4 inch deep in seed-starting mix or well-prepared garden soil. Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Once seedlings have 2-3 true leaves, thin or transplant to 18-24 inches apart. For fall crops, start seeds in mid-to-late summer.

Brussels sprouts benefit from regular watering and a layer of mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize lightly when plants are young, then side-dress as they grow. Harvest sprouts from the bottom of the stalk upward when they are firm and about 1-1.5 inches in diameter. Frost improves flavor, so leave plants in the garden into late fall where climate allows.
