Planting & Care
Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last expected frost, or sow directly in the garden in late summer for a fall crop. Plant seeds about 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep in a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil. Keep the soil evenly moist during germination and while plants become established. Thin or transplant seedlings to 18 to 24 inches apart to give them room to develop.
Brussels sprouts benefit from regular watering and a side-dressing of compost or balanced fertilizer during the growing season. As the plants grow tall, you can remove lower leaves to encourage stalk development. Harvest sprouts from the bottom of the stalk upward when they are firm and about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter. A light frost can enhance their sweetness, so leave plants in the garden into cool weather where climate allows.
